Are you ready to unveil the wonders of the Umbria region? This day excursion from Florence invites you to discover two remarkable cities: Perugia, celebrated for its chocolate and medieval artistry, and Assisi, revered as the spiritual center of Saint Francis.

Day Trip Overview

We will convene at the designated hour at Piazzale Montelungo, located in the center of Florence. Once all participants are assembled, we will depart from Tuscany and venture into the picturesque Umbrian hills.

Our journey commences in Perugia, a charming hilltop city brimming with personality. You will have leisure time to independently explore its notable sites, including Piazza IV Novembre, where the stunning Fontana Maggiore and the Cathedral stand. Be sure to visit the Rocca Paolina, a remarkable underground fortress that uncovers intriguing aspects of the city's past.

For those who enjoy sweets, Perugia holds the title of the European chocolate capital. Consider indulging in an optional chocolate tasting at a Eurochocolate store to delve deeper into its delectable offerings.

After exploring Perugia, we will proceed to Assisi. Interestingly, the hill where this town currently resides was formerly dubbed “Hill of Hell.” The construction of the Basilica of Saint Francis dramatically transformed it into the “Hill of Paradise.”

As we wander through the narrow medieval alleyways, your guide will unveil the town’s rich heritage and tales. A visit to the Basilica of Saint Francis awaits, where you can admire exquisite frescoes by renowned artists such as Giotto, Cimabue, and Simone Martini. Following the guided portion, you will enjoy additional free time to further explore. You may wish to visit the Basilica of Saint Clare, see the tomb of Carlo Acutis, recognized as the first millennial saint, or simply unwind with a coffee in the central square.

Before our return to Florence, we will make a concluding stop at the Papal Basilica of Saint Mary of the Angels. This magnificent church contains the Porziuncola, the small chapel that marked the commencement of the Franciscan order.

Ultimately, we will arrive back at the initial meeting point in Florence, thereby concluding this enriching 11-hour journey.
