Franz Josef Kayak Tour

Join us for a kayaking tour along Lake Mapourika in Franz Josef. Paddle through glacial waters, explore ancient rainforests and observe native wildlife.

Tour Details

Meet at 30 Main Road for the kayak tour on Lake Mapourika. We will start with a transport to the launch point, located within the Westland Tai Poutini National Park. Prior to departure, we will review safety guidelines and kayaking techniques for a secure experience. Then, we will kayak on the lake, enjoying views of the Southern Alps and Franz Josef Glacier. Our guide will navigate through the narrow estuary of the Okarito Kiwi Sanctuary.

During the tour, the guide will discuss the area's biodiversity as we paddle through untouched Jurassic rainforest and pristine wilderness. After approximately 3 hours on the lake, we will return to the meeting point.

Nature Walk

Enhance your experience by adding a nature walk to your kayak tour. The itinerary will remain the same, but midway through the kayaking, we will embark on a walk along a custom-built rainforest trail within the Okarito Kiwi Conservation area. Participants will learn about kiwi conservation efforts and attempt to spot native bird species.

This tour concludes back at the meeting point after a total of 4 hours.
