Franz Josef Kayak Tour

Join us for a kayaking tour along Lake Mapourika in Franz Josef! Paddle through glacial waters, discover ancient rainforests and spot native wildlife.

Tour Details

We'll meet at the indicated time at 30 Main Road for an exciting kayak tour on Lake Mapourika, a glacial lake formed as part of the Franz Josef Glacier. Paddles up as we hop into a vehicle that will take us to our launch point to explore the Westland Tai Poutini National Park.

Before setting off, we'll review safety guidelines and learn to safely kayak. Afterward, we will embark on our kayaking adventure.

We’ll paddle through the lake, taking in views of the Southern Alps and Franz Josef Glacier. Located behind our guide, we will navigate a narrow estuary within the lush ancient rainforest of the Okarito Kiwi Sanctuary.

Our guide will share insights into the area's biodiversity as we move through untouched Jurassic rainforest and pristine wilderness, perfect for photography. Prepare your cameras!

After 3 hours of gentle exercise on the tranquil lake, we will conclude the experience back at the meeting point.

Nature Walk

Enhance your visit to Franz Josef by adding a nature walk to your kayak tour! Explore ancient rainforests and connect with nature.

We will follow the same itinerary as above, but halfway through the kayak tour, we’ll take a walk along a custom-built rainforest trail within the Okarito Kiwi Conservation area. During this time, we'll learn about kiwi conservation efforts and look for native bird species.

This tour concludes back at the meeting point after a total of 4 hours.
