Join us for a kayaking tour along Lake Mapourika in Franz Josef! Paddle through glacial waters, discover ancient rainforests, and spot native wildlife.

Tour Details

We'll meet at the indicated time at 30 Main Road for a kayak tour on Lake Mapourika, formed as part of the Franz Josef Glacier. We will take a vehicle to our launch point to explore the Westland Tai Poutini National Park.

Before we start, we will review safety guidelines and learn how to kayak properly, ensuring a safe experience. Then, we will enter our kayaks and go on the water.

During the experience, we will paddle through the lake to enjoy views of the Southern Alps and Franz Josef Glacier. Our guide will lead us through a narrow estuary amidst the ancient rainforest of the Okarito Kiwi Sanctuary.

Our guide will provide insights into the area's biodiversity as we navigate through untouched Jurassic rainforest and pristine wilderness, ideal for photography. After 3 hours of kayaking, we will return to the meeting point.

Nature Walk

Enhance your experience by adding a nature walk to your kayak tour. Connect with nature while exploring ancient rainforests.

We will follow the same itinerary, but halfway through the kayak tour, we will embark on a walk along a custom-built rainforest trail within the Okarito Kiwi Conservation area, learning about kiwi conservation efforts and trying to spot native bird species.

This tour concludes back at the meeting point after a total of 4 hours.
