On this hiking tour through the levadas of Madeira, we'll explore the house of Queimadas, the Pico das Pedras, and Caldeirão Verde, crossing beautiful forests, lakes, and waterfalls along the way.
Description
At the scheduled time, we'll pick you up at your hotel in Funchal and head to one of the lush green locations on the island of Madeira.
We'll start the hiking route at Pico das Pedras, following along the most famous levadas of Madeira, which are u-shaped canals or aqueducts characteristic of this Portuguese island.
After beginning at Pico das Pedras, we will follow its levada, built in the 19th century, until we reach a dense green laurel forest. We will cross Queimadas Park, admiring its valleys, gorges, and waterfalls, and visit the Queimadas house, a thatched-roof dwelling typical of the old style in Santana.
The 5-hour-long hike will include crossing four artificial tunnels, arriving at Caldeirão Verde, a lake with a 100-meter (328-foot) high waterfall, where we'll rest and enjoy the natural scenery.
Finally, we'll retrace our steps back to the starting point. The hike lasts about 5 hours, with the entire excursion taking approximately 8 hours.
