On this hiking tour through the levadas of Madeira, we'll explore the house of Queimadas, the Pico das Pedras, and Caldeirão Verde, crossing beautiful forests, lakes, and waterfalls along the way.
Description
At the scheduled time, we'll pick you up at your hotel in Funchal and head to one of the lush locations on the island of Madeira.
Once we reach the starting point, we'll set off on the most famous levadas of Madeira. Levadas are u-shaped canals or aqueducts characteristic of this Portuguese island.
We'll begin at Pico das Pedras and follow its levada, built in the 19th century, until we reach a dense green laurel forest. We will cross the Queimadas Park, admiring its valleys, gorges, and waterfalls. Here we will find the Queimadas house, a thatched-roof dwelling built in the typical style of houses in Santana.
The 5-hour-long hike will continue as we cross four artificial tunnels, arriving at Caldeirão Verde, a lake with a 100-meter (328-foot) high waterfall, where we'll stop to rest and enjoy the scenery.
Finally, we'll retrace our steps to the starting point. The hike will last about 5 hours, and the entire excursion will take around 8 hours.
