On this hiking tour through the levadas of Madeira, we'll explore the house of Queimadas, the Pico das Pedras, and Caldeirão Verde, crossing beautiful forests, lakes, and waterfalls along the way.
Description
At the scheduled time, we'll pick you up at your hotel in Funchal and head over to one of the lush locations on the island of Madeira.
Once we reach the starting point, we'll set off along the course of the most famous levadas of Madeira, which are u-shaped canals or aqueducts characteristic of this Portuguese island.
We'll begin at Pico das Pedras and follow its levada, built in the 19th century, until we encounter a dense green laurel forest. After exploring the forest, we'll cross Queimadas Park, appreciating its valleys, gorges, and waterfalls, and visit the Queimadas house, a traditional dwelling in Santana.
The 5-hour-long hike will include crossing four artificial tunnels, culminating at Caldeirão Verde, where we'll find a lake and a 100-meter (328-foot) high waterfall to rest and enjoy the scenery.
Lastly, we will retrace our steps to the starting point. The hike lasts approximately 5 hours, while the total excursion will take around 8 hours.
