On this hiking tour through the levadas of Madeira, we'll explore the house of Queimadas, the Pico das Pedras, and Caldeirão Verde, crossing forests, lakes, and waterfalls along the way.
Description
At the scheduled time, we'll pick you up at your hotel in Funchal and head to one of the lush green locations on the island of Madeira.
Once we reach the starting point, we'll set off along the course of the most famous levadas of Madeira, which are u-shaped canals or aqueducts characteristic of this island.
Beginning at Pico das Pedras, we will follow the levada constructed in the 19th century until we reach a dense laurel forest. We will cross Queimadas Park, appreciating its valleys, gorges, and waterfalls, and find the Queimadas house, built in the traditional style of Santana.
The 5-hour-long hike will include crossing four artificial tunnels, arriving at Caldeirão Verde, a lake with a 100-meter (328-foot) high waterfall, where we will rest and enjoy the scenery.
We will then retrace our steps back to the starting point. The hike lasts about 5 hours, making the total excursion approximately 8 hours.
