Travel back in time to the 16th century with this walking tour through Galera. You'll revisit historic religious battles as you walk through one of the most beautiful villages of Andalusia.
Historical Galera Walking Tour
At the scheduled time, we'll meet at Plaza Mayor to begin a guided tour that focuses on the Arab influences in this Granada town. The exploration will cover the exciting history of Galera.
The tour will start by heading towards Cerro de la Virgen, the site of an Arab rebellion in 1569, triggered by King Philip II's law forcing citizens to abandon their Muslim traditions, leading to the Rebellion of the Alpujarras. We will discuss the details of this violence and its spread to Galera.
You will learn about the siege of Galera and its role in the expulsion of Arabs from Spain. This battle lasted almost two months and included more than 12,000 soldiers.
As we navigate the steep slopes to the top of Cerro de la Virgen, we'll enjoy panoramic views of the historic center of Galera, observing the town's houses and chapel located on the site of the old Arab castle from the Al-Andalus period.
After two and a half hours of exploration, the tour will conclude back at our starting point.
