On this guided tour of the Rolli palaces, we will discover the magnificent Genoese residences, crafted by the wealthy families of the city during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries amid its Golden Age.
Rolli Palaces Guided Tour
The tour will commence at 3 pm on Via Garibaldi, located in the heart of Genoa's old town, noted for its concentration of historic palaces.
The Palazzi dei Rolli were recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2006. This stunning ensemble of private mansions was chronicled in the "Rolli", a public lodging lottery. Each selected palace was mandated to accommodate the most distinguished visitors on behalf of the government. Kings, princes, diplomats, and various guests of the Genoese Republic found hospitality in these luxurious and artistically adorned homes. Renowned artists like Rubens took notice of these palaces, documenting them in drawings intended for the noble class.
Throughout the tour, we will admire the opulent reception areas, exquisite decorations, the masterpieces of notable Genoese artists, stunning frescoes, and the grandeur of living spaces of these elite families.
Our first stop will be the Palazzo Rosso, a 17th-century estate boasting extensive art collections and furnishings from the Brignole-Sale family. We will delve into its history as we stroll through its elaborately adorned rooms adorned with frescoes and stuccoes.
Next, we will visit the Nicolosio Lomellino Palace, also known as Palazzo Podestà. Inside this splendid Renaissance structure, we will take in the frescoes and stucco artwork that embellish many of the palace's ceilings.
Our path will lead us to the Palace of Tobia Pallavicino, or Palazzo Carrega-Cataldi. This striking building, currently housing the Genoa Chamber of Commerce, showcases masterpieces from renowned Genoese Baroque artists like Lorenzo de Ferrari.
To conclude our journey, we will visit one of the most remarkable areas of the Palazzo di Tobia Pallavicini: the Golden Gallery. This room is known for its lavish ornamentation and is considered one of the most magnificent spaces of the Rolli palaces.
The tour will culminate with a visit to the Imperial Palace, where we will relish the beauty of its decorations and impressive frescoes.
