Iglesiente Mines Coastal Tour
At 9 am, we'll meet at Fontanamare Beach, located just 12 kilometers from the center of Iglesias. From there, we'll set off on a route to explore the region of Iglesiente, famous for its historic mines and coastline. The tour will combine walking and driving your own vehicle, following the guide who will also travel in their own car.
We'll learn details about this historic area while we admire the end of the Umberto I Gallery, a 19th-century tunnel connecting the Monteponi mine with Fontanamare beach. Nearby, we'll see ruins of buildings related to this sector, including an old chimney.
As we walk to the mining village of Nebida, we'll discuss the history of the area, highlighting the role of Phoenicians, Carthaginians, and Romans in exploiting the mineral deposits of Sardinia.
We'll walk through Nebida and descend its hills until we reach the ruins of the La Marmora wash plant, where zinc and lead were once separated. Afterward, we'll head to a viewpoint for panoramic views of the coast of Masua and the islet of Pan di Zucchero.
At Masua beach, we'll provide half an hour of free time for relaxation. Then, we'll continue to the Porto Flavia mine, operational until 1964, with an exclusive tour of the mine site without waiting in lines for access.
At 2 pm, the tour will conclude at the entrance of the Porto Flavia mine.
