Charreada Rodeo Tour
At 10 am, we'll meet at the Campo Charro Jalisco cultural centre in Guadalajara. Here, we'll begin our experience of charrería or charreada, a rodeo-like equestrian sport recognized as Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
Accompanied by authentic charro horsemen, we'll visit the charreria museum to see traditional costumes, saddles, and metalwork characteristic of charreado. We'll learn about the history of this activity in Mexico, its evolution, and the origin of the word "charro".
After the charreado museum tour, we'll observe the nine different events, known as suertes, which include reining, heeling, steer tailing, and the "pass of death", involving a jump onto an unbroken horse from another horse. Participants will also try riding the horses.
We will learn about the relationship between charros and their horses, and have the opportunity to engage with a group of charros about their performances.
After exploring this Jalisco tradition, we'll toast with tequila. The experience concludes at 2 pm back at the starting point.
