At 2579 above sea level, on top of Mount Cubilete, sits its this beautiful and historically significant sanctuary to Cristo Rey.

The monument, in addition to being situated in the dead centre of the country is also one of the most historically important religious shrines in Mexico. It was originally the site of a smaller monument but this was destroyed during the so-called Cristero War in the latter stages of the Mexican Revolution.

The current building and base for the gigantic statue was built in the art deco style by Nicolas Mariscal in 1944. This can be appreciated in the base and reliefs as well as in the choice of materials used in its construction. Christ is portrayed with open arms, seemingly pouring his blessings over the whole country, while two angels kneel at his sides, one holding the crown of thorns, the other a royal crown. You will also be able to admire splendid views of the Guanajuato valley from the base of the monument.
