Travel back in time by learning about the history of Mexican Independence with this tour of the Guanajuato towns that were the scene of the insurrection: Dolores Hidalgo, Atotonilco and San Miguel de Allende.
Description
After pickup from your hotel in Guanajuato, we'll tour the events of the Mexican Revolution that led to independence. Our first stop will be at the Conservas Santa Rosa store to sample traditional sweets made in the Guanajuato Mountain Range.
Next, we visit Dolores Hidalgo, where priest Miguel Hidalgo Costilla initiated the revolution with his Cry of Dolores in 1810. We'll see the church where the uprising began and learn about the independence movement’s origins. Other stops include the city's old prison, the house museum of Hidalgo, and the mausoleum of singer José Alfredo Jiménez, along with time to explore local handicraft and pottery stalls before heading to Atotonilco.
At Atotonilco, we'll enter the Sanctuary of Jesus Nazareno, a baroque church with historical murals. After a lunch break, we will proceed to San Miguel de Allende, the birthplace of war leader General Ignacio Allende, where you will have an hour of free time to explore.
We will return you to the center of Guanajuato, near the Juarez Theater, approximately 8 hours after pickup.
Partial closures
During weekends, Atotonilco may not be accessible due to spiritual retreats. From July 3-24, the José Alfredo Jiménez House Museum will be closed.
