Excursion to Trancoso, Marialva & Linhares da Beira
We will gather at Praça Luís de Camões in Guarda at the designated hour to begin our adventure toward Trancoso, Marialva, and Linhares da Beira, three of the most significant historic villages in Portugal.
Our first destination is Trancoso, an enchanting town regarded as one of the premier villages in the country. While wandering through its streets, we'll uncover the pivotal historical role this town played in the assertion of independence and the safeguarding of Portugal's borders.
We'll take a closer look at the remnants of its medieval fortifications and the exterior of the Castle of Trancoso, two noteworthy landmarks along Portugal's renowned Route of Historical Villages (Grande Rota das Aldeias Históricas de Portugal), commonly referred to as GR22. After capturing the beauty of Trancoso, we'll proceed to our next village, Marialva.
Upon arrival, the Castle of Marialva will immediately draw your attention, as this stronghold overlooks the medieval town from its elevated position. We will stroll through its historic streets while uncovering fascinating tales about this locale. Beyond the fortress, we will also explore the churches of Marialva and the main square, which features remnants of the ancient city and serves as the core of the town’s civil and administrative activities.
Next, we will venture to Linhares da Beira, recognized as one of the most desirable villages in Portugal. Once there, we’ll observe one of the best-preserved castles in the nation alongside its distinctive urban layout. The historic architecture of its old town blends seamlessly with local myths and legends.
During our exploration, we'll visit the Misericordia Church and the Igreja Matriz, the main church, both of which carry substantial historical significance. Our adventure will conclude with our return to the meeting point in Guarda after approximately 4 hours.
