Embark on a 14 km hiking adventure to a picturesque tea plantation in Haputale, where you will meander through lush forests. Encounter unique flora and fauna along the way, and take part in the delightful experience of tea leaf picking!

Haputale Tea Plantation Hiking Tour

The day begins with a meeting at Haputale train station, followed by a scenic 1.5-hour train journey to Ohiya.

Upon arrival at the Ohiya train station, our trekking adventure commences. We will traverse through dense forests, appreciating the stunning natural landscapes of this region in Sri Lanka. Our path will lead us for approximately 30 minutes to a scenic viewpoint that overlooks the tea plantation. From there, we will proceed onward for another half hour until we reach our destination.

Once at the tea plantation, we will meet the family who runs the estate, and they will guide us through their lands, showcasing the various products crafted from the tea plant. You will witness firsthand the process of tea leaf picking and may even get the chance to join the harvest, creating a genuinely immersive experience.

After bidding farewell to the family, we will stroll through eucalyptus and pine forests, following the train tracks as we navigate through tunnels carved into the Sri Lankan mountains.

Next on our journey, we will pause for a picnic lunch before continuing our trek through the Thangamale bird sanctuary. Here, we will be treated to stunning vistas of the mountain that shares its name, along with views of the Uva Basin. Look out for various bird species, including blue magpies, flycatchers, golden orioles, trogons, black eagles, and many more!

Our adventure will conclude at Ohiya after completing a total of 8.7 miles (14 km). We will then board the train back to Haputale, wrapping up our 6-hour tour at the station.
