Haputale Tea Plantation Hiking Tour
On this hiking tour to a Haputale tea plantation, we will hike 14 km through forests, observing exotic plants and animals and participating in tea leaf picking.
Early morning meeting at Haputale train station for a 1.5-hour train ride to Ohiya.
From Ohiya train station, we commence our trek through the natural environment. We will walk for about 30 minutes to a panoramic viewpoint of the tea plantation, then proceed for another half hour to our destination.
We will meet the family managing the tea plantation, who will provide a tour of their land and products made from tea plants. Participants can engage in the tea leaf harvest.
Afterward, we will walk through eucalyptus and pine forests, following train tracks through tunnels under Sri Lankan mountains.
We will pause for a picnic lunch before continuing to the Thangamale bird sanctuary, offering views of the mountain and the Uva Basin. Birdwatching will include sightings of blue magpies, flycatchers, golden orioles, trogons, and black eagles.
Concluding our hike after walking a total of 14 km (8.7 miles), we will return by train to Haputale, completing the tour in approximately 6 hours.
