Haputale Tea Plantation Hiking Tour
We will meet early in the morning at Haputale train station for a 1.5-hour train ride to Ohiya.
From Ohiya train station, we will start our trek, walking for about 30 minutes to reach a panoramic viewpoint of the tea plantation, followed by another half hour to our destination.
We will meet the family managing the tea plantation, who will show us around their land and products made from the tea plant. We will observe the tea leaf picking process and can participate in the harvest.
Afterward, we will say goodbye to the family and walk through eucalyptus and pine forests along the train tracks and through tunnels under the mountains.
Next, we will stop for a picnic lunch and continue to the Thangamale bird sanctuary, enjoying views of the mountain and the Uva Basin. We will see various species of birds such as blue magpies and black eagles.
We will conclude our hike at Ohiya after walking a total of 8.7 miles (14 km). The tour ends with the train back to Haputale after a 6-hour experience.
