Haputale Tea Plantation Hiking Tour
On this hiking tour, we'll hike 14 km through forests, observing exotic plants and animals and participating in tea leaf picking.
Early in the morning, we'll meet at Haputale train station for a 1.5-hour train ride to Ohiya.
From Ohiya station, we’ll commence our trek, walking for about 30 minutes to a panoramic viewpoint overlooking the tea plantation, followed by an additional half-hour walk to our destination.
Upon arrival, we’ll meet the family managing the tea plantation, who will provide a tour of their land and the products they create from the tea plant. You'll be able to participate in tea leaf harvesting.
Afterward, we’ll bid farewell to the family and walk through eucalyptus and pine forests, following train tracks into tunnels beneath the mountains.
Next, we’ll have a picnic lunch and continue to the Thangamale bird sanctuary, where we’ll enjoy views of the mountain and the Uva Basin. Birdwatchers can look forward to seeing various species including blue magpies and black eagles.
We will conclude the tour after a total walk of 8.7 miles (14 km), taking the train back to Haputale to finish after a 6-hour experience.
