On this day trip to Matala, we will explore notable beaches and one of Europe's well-known hippie colonies, significant in Greek mythology.
Day Trip Details
We will pick you up at the scheduled time to travel across the plain of Messara towards Matala, a site renowned since the 1960s.
Our first stop will be a site that served as a port for Romans and Minoans, where we will learn about how Matala evolved into a hippie colony, with members residing in caves carved into the rock during the Roman era.
We will also explore the mythological aspect of this site, including the story of how the god Zeus abducted the Phoenician princess Europa in the form of a white bull.
Participants will have four hours of free time in Matala to enjoy its scenic beaches like the Red and Kommos beaches, browse through craft stalls, sample local cuisine, and visit the renowned sandstone caves associated with hippie life.
We will reconvene for the return journey, arriving back at the starting point approximately eight hours after the initial pickup.
