On this day trip to Matala, we'll visit beaches and one of the most well-known hippie colonies in Europe, significant in Greek mythology.
Day Trip Details
We'll pick you up at the scheduled time to cross the plain of Messara towards Matala, known for its fame in the 60s.
First, we'll explore this site, historically a port for the Romans and Minoans, and learn about the formation of the hippie colony, where members occupied rock-carved caves during the Roman period.
Additionally, we'll discuss the mythological significance of the area, where, according to Greek tradition, the god Zeus abducted the Phoenician princess Europa in the form of a white bull.
Participants will have four hours of free time in Matala to enjoy its pristine beaches, including the Red and Kommos beaches; explore local craft stalls, sample local cuisine, and visit the sandstone caves where the hippies resided.
Finally, we will reconvene to return to the starting point, arriving approximately eight hours after pickup.
