Excursion Overview
Starting the trip at the designated time, we will journey through the Messara Plain towards Matala, a legendary site that gained prominence in the 1960s.
Your first stop will be this historically significant area, which served as a port for the Minoans and Romans. Here, you will learn about Matala's transformation into a hippie colony, where individuals inhabited caves carved into the rocks during ancient times.
Moreover, we will delve into the mythological history of this region, where, as per Greek lore, Zeus whisked away the Phoenician princess Europa in the form of a white bull.
You will have four hours of leisure time in Matala to relax on its beautiful shores, with highlights including the Red and Kommos beaches; explore its artisan markets, savor local dishes, and discover the iconic sandstone caves that once served as homes for hippies.
