Activity Details
Your experience begins with a pickup from your hotel in Hermosillo. Following this, we will travel toward the La Pintada archaeological site, embarking on a fascinating hiking experience.
After a 40-minute drive, we will initiate a hike of between 2.5 and 3.7 miles (4 to 6 kilometres) to uncover the wonders of this historic area. Situated within a desert landscape in the heart of Sonora, La Pintada showcases remnants of civilizations that date from 700 AD to 1500 AD.
During our exploration of the various caves, you will encounter the abundant cave paintings, which include a total of over 2,000 artworks that illustrate the perspectives of different ethnic groups towards their environment. We will share insights into the sacred ceremonies that once took place here and discuss how this area served as refuge for the Seri and Yaqui indigenous groups during the arrival of Spanish settlers.
As we navigate through this archaeological site, look out for diverse plant species such as the ocotillo, palo fierro (ironwood), mesquite, and gobernadora (greasewood). After finishing our hiking excursion at La Pintada, we'll enjoy a satisfying lunch featuring grilled meat and water.
Upon concluding our adventure, we will make our way back to Hermosillo, arriving approximately 10 hours after the initial pickup.
