Idanha-a-Velha Guided Tour
On this guided tour of Idanha-a-Velha, we will explore the main archaeological remains of this village founded by the Romans over 2,000 years ago.
We will meet at the North Gate of the city wall at the designated time. The guided tour will cover Roman and Visigoth ruins, highlighting the rich history of the area.
The tour will begin with an overview of the Roman wall of Idanha-a-Velha, a prosperous city originally named Igaeditanorum. The medieval walled enclosure dates back to the 3rd and 4th centuries and remains a significant feature of this historic village in central Portugal.
We will then visit the Tower of the Templars, which is built on the site of an ancient Roman temple that has been well preserved. We will uncover its historical significance.
Next, we will explore the archaeological remains near the cathedral, including the ruins of a baptistery, recognized as the oldest in the Iberian Peninsula, and the episcopal residence.
After a two-hour tour of Idanha-a-Velha, we will conclude the visit at the meeting point.
