Day Trip to Pisagua
Your adventure begins between 8 and 9 am when we collect you from your accommodation in Iquique and embark heading north to Pisagua.
This coastal locale, situated in the Chilean region of Tarapacá, played a crucial role during the War of the Pacific. From 1879 to 1884, Chile faced a coalition formed by Peru and Bolivia.
As we navigate through the town, we'll unearth the stories of this conflict, focusing particularly on the Battle of San Francisco (also known as Dolores), which occurred during the Tarapacá campaign. Witness the enduring marks of this historical clash as we visit the seaside cemetery, adorned with its iconic wooden crosses.
Our exploration will lead us to the monument commemorating the landing and battle in Pisagua on November 2, 1879. We will delve into the narrative of these events before taking a leisurely stroll through the town to uncover its connections to the saltpetre industry. The charming 19th-century wooden structures will capture our attention as we wander.
A stop at a local eatery will allow you to savor a tasty lunch, showcasing the flavors of the local cuisine. After our meal, we will further explore Pisagua's history. This village, once a detention center in the 20th century, now stands as a prominent symbol of the defense of human rights.
