The famous moai statues are the iconic symbols of Easter Island. On this trip to Ahu Akivi, we will visit some of the most important archaeological sites and discover just how important they are in Rapanui culture.
Ahu Akivi Trip
After hotel pickup at the indicated time, we will travel to Ahu Akivi, one of the few moai sites away from the coastline.
Witness the seven moai of this sacred place, which faces exactly at sunset during the March equinox. The moai of Ahu Akivi are unique for their precise astronomical orientation.
As we tour this sanctuary, you will discover the significance of Ahu Akivi. Legend states that the seven moai represent the seven explorers that discovered the island after a long journey from another island in present-day Polynesia.
The tour will proceed to Panu Pau, a quarry on a small volcanic crater where Rapanui mined distinctive red sandstone. This rock was used to make the ‘pukao’ stone headdresses seen atop some moai. The ‘pukao’ represented the hair bun typically worn by the Rapanui.
The final stop will be the Tahai Ceremonial Complex, where we will explore archaeological ruins facing the Pacific Ocean. We will return to your hotel, with the total trip lasting three hours.
