The Jewish Shabbat introduced the world to the concept of the weekend. This tour explores the origins, history, and significance of the holy day in Jerusalem's historic centre.
Shabbat Experience Walking Tour
At the scheduled time, we'll meet at the Jaffa Gate to learn about Shabbat, which begins at sunset on Friday and ends at sunset on Saturday. Key practices include Torah reading, rest, and prayer.
We will start by exploring the Jewish quarter and visiting the Four Sephardic Synagogues: Eliahu Ha-Nav, Yochanan Ben-Zakai, Istanbul, and Kahal Tsion. Each synagogue will be discussed, focusing on its design and significance.
Next, we will walk through the centre of the Old City of Jerusalem to the Hurva synagogue, built by Sephardic Jews from Spain and Europe. We will learn about its history, particularly the events following a devastating fire.
This tour will also include a visit to the Western Wall, a significant site for the Jewish community. Visitors often insert wishes into the wall's crevices, making it a poignant stop on our journey.
We will conclude the tour approximately two hours after departure, returning to the starting point.
