The Jewish Shabbat introduced the concept of the weekend. This walking tour in Jerusalem's historic centre focuses on the origins, history, and significance of the holy day.

Shabbat Experience Walking Tour

We will meet at the Jaffa Gate at the scheduled time to discuss the meaning of Shabbat for the Jewish community. This holy day begins at sunset on Friday and ends at sunset on Saturday, featuring practices such as Torah reading, rest, and prayer.

The tour begins in the Jewish quarter, where we will visit the Four Sephardic Synagogues: Eliahu Ha-Nav, Yochanan Ben-Zakai, Istanbul, and Kahal Tsion. Each synagogue will be discussed, with a focus on its unique ornamentation.

Next, we will walk through the centre of the Old City of Jerusalem to the Hurva synagogue, built by Sephardic Jews from Spain and other European nations, and learn about the events following the devastating fire caused by the Arabs.

The tour includes a visit to the Western Wall, a site of great significance due to the Jewish people's lament over the destruction of their sacred area. Participants will have the opportunity to insert a wish into the wall.

We will conclude the tour by returning to the starting point approximately two hours after departure.
