Immerse yourself in the charm of Jodhpur on this walking tour of the Blue City. Discover why the historic centre is known for its colour as you explore its beautiful streets and monuments.

Blue City Walking Tour Itinerary

Begin your walking tour of the Blue City from your meeting point in the historic Navchokiya district. This part of the old town is home to beautiful temples, bustling bazaars, and the havelis - the typical indigo blue houses for which the city has been nicknamed.

As you stroll through the labyrinthine streets, admire the distinct colour of these houses, originally painted blue to indicate that brahmins, or Hindu priests, lived there. Over time, this practice extended to many other residents, as the vivid blue paint was believed to have insect-repelling and heat-insulating properties.

Continue your route around Jodhpur, reaching the Ranisar Lake, an artificial reservoir constructed over 500 years ago to store water. Your guided walking tour of the Blue City will finish in the area surrounding the incredible Mehrangarh Fort. Located on a rocky hilltop almost 400 feet (120 m) above the city centre, it is one of India's most magnificent fortresses, offering unique panoramic views over the blue houses below.
