Why visit the Shipwreck Treasure Museum?
The dangerous cliffs of the Florida Keys were the cause of many shipwrecks of Spanish galleons during the 16th century. The finds recovered from these ships were collected in the Key West Shipwreck Treasure Museum, a visit to which is like stepping through a portal to the past.
This two-story building celebrates the history of Key West, whose fortune was boosted by the riches of the sunken ships and the salvage efforts of local crews. The museum itself is a recreation of a 19th-century shipwreck salvage warehouse and exhibits 400-year-old artifacts found on the ships, as well as numerous audiovisual projections that help you to better understand this historic work.
You can tour the various rooms with a multitude of treasures from the Spanish galleons and access the watchtower, a replica of those used to spot shipwrecks. You can even ring the bell that used to warn the locals when a wreck was spotted. Actors in costume will guide you through the rich history of Key West.
