This free tour of the Little Mermaid and the Port of Copenhagen provides insights into the Danish capital's maritime history and the city's iconic statue.
Description
The tour begins at the Generator Copenhagen Hostel. Participants will walk around the Port of Copenhagen to uncover the historical significance of this economic and cultural exchange hub. Various monuments in the area will be explored alongside their origins.
During the journey to the coast, the group will pass through the King's Gardens and view the exterior of Rosenborg Castle before reaching Nyboder, a district with notable orange buildings built in the 17th century for the Danish Navy. The relation between the growth of the merchant port and navy personnel will be discussed.
Next, the tour will approach Kastellet, an ancient fort in Northern Europe. After exploring this citadel, the group will arrive at the sculpture of the Little Mermaid, inspired by Hans Christian Andersen's fairy tale and a city icon. Participants should bring their cameras.
The location of the statue provides a view of the Port of Copenhagen, the largest harbour in Denmark and a key port in the Baltic Sea. As the group walks along the harbour, they will also see the Copenhagen Opera House, Nyholm Central Guardhouse, and Ofelia Plads. The tour concludes after 2.5 hours at Nyhavn Canal in the heart of Copenhagen.
