The Dark Side of Hong Kong: Mong Kok
We will meet at Prince Edward Station to explore the challenges of housing in Hong Kong, highlighting the city's expensive and less affordable real estate market. Families may reside in apartments as small as 10 square meters (107 sq ft).
The tour will take us along Portland Street, showcasing the contrast between traditional 4-story buildings and modern 30-story skyscrapers, reflecting the urbanization of Hong Kong.
Next, we will visit a subdivided housing unit on Cedar Street, providing first-hand experience of tiny living spaces, detailing the precarious conditions many face, including cage houses.
We will then stop at Lui Seng Chun, where we’ll enjoy herbal tea while listening to local stories about their struggles with housing.
Continuing along Lai Chi Kok Road and Boundary Street, we will uncover more examples of subdivided housing and discuss the impact of gentrification on impoverished neighborhoods.
Finally, we will reach Hai Tan Street to examine the role of land sales in low income tax in Hong Kong amidst escalating social inequality.
The tour concludes at Sham Shui Po Station, providing insight into the harsh realities faced by many residents in Hong Kong. The tour lasts approximately 2-2.5 hours.
