Grande-Sauve Abbey

Situated a little over 30 km from Bordeaux, the ruins of the former Benedictine Grand-Sauve Abbey stand as one of the prominent Romanesque structures in the Gironde department.

Upon acquiring your ticket to Grande-Sauve Abbey, you will explore the vestiges of this ancient religious site, constructed between the 11th and 13th centuries. Even after centuries, the essence of Romanesque architecture can be appreciated through the capitals and other parts of the structure that remain.

The abbey’s name, Grande-Sauve, translates to "The Large Jungle," reflecting its surroundings. While navigating through the sprawling grounds of over 4.94 acres (2 hectares), you will find the abbey enveloped by flourishing, green landscapes.

In addition to the abbey's remnants, various informational panels are available. These provide insights into the history of the abbey, which forms part of the monuments of the French Camino de Santiago, recognized as World Heritage Sites.

Opening Times

The Grande-Sauve Abbey welcomes visitors during the following hours:

April 1 to September 30: Operating from 10 am to 6:30 pmOctober 1 to March 31: Open daily from 10 am to 1 pm and from 2 pm to 5 pm.

The last entry is 45 minutes before closing time.

On December 24 and 31, the final admission is at 4 pm.

Entry to Grande-Sauve Abbey is complimentary for the following individuals:

Young people between 18 to 25 years of age from the European Union.Minors under the age of 18, regardless of their nationality.Unemployed persons, individuals with disabilities and their companions, journalists, architecture students, tourism professionals, military personnel, police officers, and other state security members.

Free admission is granted to all on the first Sunday of each month from January 1 to March 31, and from November 1 to December 31. Additionally, it is free on the third weekend of September.
