La Vega Religious History Tour
At 10 am, we'll pick you up from your hotel and start a tour of La Vega's religious history, focusing on the Catholic faith.
We'll stroll through Duarte Park to the Immaculate Conception Cathedral. Inside, we'll observe the wall colors, the semi-elliptical columns, and the symbolism of the number 12. We will also see the resurrected Christ, the Virgin of Christopher Columbus, and the first cross in America.
Next, we visit the Sacred Museum, featuring Taíno figures, archaeological remains, paintings, valued relics, and an allegory of the first indigenous baptism. We will exit from the location of the old cathedral and proceed to Santo Cerro, home to the Church of Our Lady of Mercedes, discussing the legend of the Virgin Mary's apparition.
We then head to La Vega Vieja, the site of the first Spanish settlement, which was destroyed by a 16th-century earthquake. Here, we will learn about Christianisation and the area's first settlers.
After this tour, we will return to the starting point and conclude our visit at 1:30 pm.
