La Vega Religious History Tour
At 10 am, we'll pick you up from your hotel and start a tour of La Vega's religious history, focusing on the Catholic faith.
We'll walk through Duarte Park to the Immaculate Conception Cathedral, where we will observe its wall colors, semi-elliptical columns, and the symbolism of the number 12. We will also see the resurrected Christ, the Virgin of Christopher Columbus, and the first cross in America.
Next, we will visit the Sacred Museum to view Taíno figures, archaeological remains, paintings, relics, and an allegory of the first indigenous baptism. Afterward, we’ll see the site of the old cathedral before heading to Santo Cerro, home to the Church of Our Lady of Mercedes, where we’ll discuss the Virgin Mary's apparition.
We will then proceed to La Vega Vieja, the site of the first Spanish settlement, which was destroyed by an earthquake in the 16th century. Here, we will learn about Christianisation and the area's initial settlers.
The tour concludes at 1:30 pm, returning you to the starting point.
