Emperor Pachacutec ordered the construction of a trail through the majestic Andes mountains linking the imperial city of Cusco to Machu Picchu, which is now a popular route. This 4-day Inca Trail hike follows the Inca ruler's path through stunning Peruvian landscapes.
4-Day Inca Trail Hike to Machu Picchu
Day 1: Urubamba - Wayllabamba
We will pick you up at your hotel in Urubamba and start the journey to Piscacucho for the first trek. We will hike through the Andes, admiring views of La Veronica and following the Vilcanota River to the archaeological site of Llactapata. After exploring Llactapata, we’ll have lunch in Taray and continue to the Wayllabamba camp at 3300 meters (10,826 feet) for dinner and overnight.
Day 2: Warmi Wañusqa - Pacaymayo
After breakfast, we will hike uphill to Warmi Wañusqa, the highest point of the Inca Trail at 4200 meters (13,780 feet). Following this, we will descend to Pacaymayo for dinner and rest.
Day 3: Runkuracay - Sayacmarca - Puyupatamarca - Wiñay Huayna
We will begin the longest hike, visiting the ruins of Runkuracay, and continue to the citadels of Sayacmarca and Puyupatamarca. After lunch, we will head to the archaeological site of Wiñay Huayna for dinner and overnight.
Day 4: Inti Punku - Machu Picchu
On the final day, we will hike to Machu Picchu, passing through Inti Punku for panoramic views. A three-hour guided tour of the site will follow, allowing time for exploration before taking a bus to Aguas Calientes for the train back to your hotel in Urubamba or alternatives like Ollantaytambo, Yucay, or Cusco.
Accommodation
The tour includes three nights in camping tents at Wayllabamba, Pacaymayo, and Wiñay Huayna. Sleeping bags and trekking poles are not included but can be rented at the camp.
Difficulty of the Hike
The difficulty and distance vary: 12, 11, 16, and 6 kilometers (7.5, 5.6, 10, and 3.7 miles) respectively, requiring good physical condition due to medium to high intensity at high altitudes.
