Explore the enchanting world of Middle-earth on our Lord of the Rings tour from Wellington, and see iconic filming locations full of natural beauty!

Tour Details

During the booking process, select from two tour options. At the designated time, meet at your chosen point to begin a day visiting filming locations from The Lord of the Rings. Both tours include entry to the Weta Workshop and a guided tour of the studio. Below are further details for each tour:

Half-Day Tour (4 Hours)

Departing Wellington, we'll head toward Mount Victoria, passing the Embassy Picture Theatre, site of world premieres for Return of the King (2003) and The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey (2012).

At Mount Victoria's lookout, enjoy views before exploring Hobbiton Woods, where filmmaking processes and stories will be shared. This location features memorable scenes such as the "second breakfast" and the Hobbits evading the Black Rider.

Next, visit the Miramar Peninsula and the Weta Workshop, where the magic of cinema is unveiled. At the Weta Cave, spend time for souvenirs and pictures with characters like Gollum. Our guide will assist with photography.

The tour concludes at a bay area used for parts of Rivendell.

Available times: Daily at 8:30 am, 1 pm, and 1:30 pm.

Full-Day Tour (8 hours)

The full-day tour follows a similar itinerary with additional stops and insights into film sites.

After the lookout, head to the Weta Workshop for an exclusive behind-the-scenes tour with an artist explaining props and costumes.

The tour continues along the Hutt River, the River Anduin, where notable scenes occurred. A lunch featuring traditional dishes will be provided at a nearby café.

After lunch, visit Kaitoke Regional Park, used as Rivendell and learn about its transformation into Elrond's house.

Finally, explore the Gardens of Isengard in Harcourt Park and pass by the Dry Creek Quarry on the return to Wellington.

Available times: Daily at 8:30 am.
