The setting of The Count of Monte Cristo by Alexandre Dumas features the Château d'If, known for its historical significance. Your ticket allows exploration of the old cells and key areas of this former state prison, initially built between 1524 and 1531 by King Francis I for coastal defense.
From its towers and turrets, visitors can enjoy stunning coastal views, including the nearby Frioul archipelago islands. The prison has a rich history with various notable inmates, including Protestants in the 1700s and revolutionary figures in the 19th century. Château d'If operates under the following schedule:
April 1 - September 30: Daily from 10:30 am to 6 pm.October 1 - March 31: Daily from 10:30 am to 5 pm.
Final admission is subject to the boat schedule from Marseille's port.
Free Admission
Admission is free for:
EU residents aged 18 to 25.Children under 18 of any nationality.
To obtain free admission, visit the ticket office with a valid ID for verification. Free entry is also available on the first Sunday of the month in certain periods and on the third weekend of September.
Transport Not Included
The ticket does not cover transport to the Island of If. Access is available via ferry from the Old Port (Vieux Port) of Marseille, which incurs an additional cost.
