Archaeological remains, cloisters, and PDO bread await on our Altamura & Gravina Day Trip. If you’d like to explore Matera's surroundings, this is the perfect activity for you!
Altamura & Gravina Day Trip
At 9:30 am, we'll meet in Piazza Vittorio Veneto and board a bus for our trip to Altamura and Gravina.
Altamura, known for its heritage and PDO bread, will be our first destination. We will start our tour from Porto Bari, one of the entrances to the old town.
We will walk to the Cathedral, built in the 13th century, and observe its sculpted portal and the clock tower, a Gothic addition from 1858.
Continuing through Altamura, we'll visit the Cloisters, including the Giudecca Cloister, the Tradimento Cloister, and the Mori Cloister, which retain their original layout.
Next, we'll enter the National Archaeological Museum of Altamura to view the famous Altamura Man, a Neanderthal skeleton from local caves. Before the museum, we will taste some PDO bread from a wood-fired oven.
You will have free time for lunch, after which we'll head to Gravina, built upon a ravine of almost 330 feet (100 metres). We will see the Cathedral of the Assumption, the Crypt of St. Michael, and cross the bridge of the Madonna della Stella.
We will return to Matera and drop you off at your hotel around 5 pm.
