Get ready to be amazed by the historic center of Matera on this guided walking tour. You'll see the famous churches and rural houses of this city in Basilicata.
Tour Details
At the designated time, we'll meet at Via Alessandro Volta. From here, we'll begin our guided walking tour of Matera, a city inhabited since the Paleolithic times.
Following the Via San Francesco, we will first stop in front of the Church of San Francesco. Its exterior will greet us as we admire its facade while learning about the churches' role in the history and daily life of the Sassi.
Then, we'll reach the Piazza del Sedile and descend to Sassi di Matera, one of the oldest areas in the city, surrounded by stone houses and hand-carved streets. This area is a World Heritage Site.
The tour will take us through winding streets with scenic views of the city. We'll visit the rural church of San Antonio, where you'll discover fascinating details.
Later, we'll enter a traditional Sassi house to witness how generations lived in adapting to extreme weather without electricity and water.
Next, we'll head to Via Madonna delle Virtù, where the historic Sassi, Barisano and Caveoso, meet. Lastly, we'll reach Porta Pistoia and then the Church of San Pietro Caveoso on the cliff's border before concluding the tour.
Finally, after 2 hours, we'll say goodbye at this last spot.
