Matera Guided Tour: Lombard Cemetery & Cave Constructions

Gather at the designated time in Piazza Vittorio Veneto, located in Matera's historic center. The tour begins with a guided walk through the old town, revealing stories behind three significant monuments.

Our first stop is the Church of Santa Maria d'Idris, an intricately carved cave temple in the cliffs. Learn about its name linked to ancient water flows in the region. The temple features a seventeenth-century religious painting and the figure of San Eustaquio, Matera's patron saint. A tunnel connects it to the cave crypt of San Giovanni di Monterrone, decorated with frescoes.

Next, we will visit Matera's Lombard Cemetery, on an old monastic site. Explore the insights of Carlo Levi, who found contemplation here.

Concluding the tour, we will enter a cave house to understand Matera's ancient way of life. The tour lasts for 2 hours, ending at Piazza Giovanni Pascoli.
