Matera Private Tour
You will meet your guide at the selected time in the Piazza Vittorio Veneto for your guided walking tour of Matera. The tour lasts two hours, during which you will explore the historic centre of this southern Italian city.
You will enjoy panoramic views of the Sassi, a UNESCO World Heritage Site known for its ancient cave dwellings that have been inhabited since prehistoric times. These rock-carved homes are among the first human settlements in Italy.
As you walk through the main streets of Matera, you will recognize the historic golden-stone architecture, which has been compared to Jerusalem and used as a filming location for various movies, including Mel Gibson's The Passion of the Christ and Wonder Woman.
The tour includes a visit to the Matera Cathedral, an example of 13th-century Apulian Romanesque architecture located at the city's highest point. You will also explore several Sassi and learn about the origins of the cave dwellings.
Your final stop will be the Chapel of Sant'Antonio Abate, one of Matera's four Rupestrian churches, where you will discover the ancient cave paintings on the rock-hewn walls and ceiling.
