Cave dwellings, rock churches and giant ancient cisterns: explore Matera's historic centre on this tuk-tuk tour, offering a unique perspective on the 2019 European Capital of Culture.
Matera Tuk-Tuk Tour
Meet your guide in Via Alessandro Volta and board your tuk-tuk, known as "Ape calessino" in Italian. The tour includes several stops at key places of interest. The first stop is the Church of Purgatory, built in 1747, notable for its many architectural references to death, including skulls and skeletons.
Next, visit the Matera Cathedral, situated at the city's highest point. This cathedral features a 52-metre-tall (170 feet) belfry, whose bells resonate throughout the city.
Continue to the Church of San Giovanni, then explore the Sasso Barisano and Sasso Cavoso neighbourhoods, home to the UNESCO World Heritage Site of sassi di Matera, known for their rock-hewn houses. These districts have served as filming locations for notable movies, including The Passion of the Christ.
Your immersive 50-minute tuk-tuk tour concludes at Piazza San Francesco.
