Matera Tuk-Tuk Tour

After meeting your guide in Via Alessandro Volta, you'll board your tuk-tuk to begin your tour of historic Matera. This vehicle is known as an "Ape calessino"? in Italian.

During your tuk-tuk tour, you'll visit several of the city's key points of interest, starting with the Church of Purgatory. Built in 1747, the church features numerous architectural references to death, including a façade adorned with skulls and skeletons.

Just five minutes away is the Matera Cathedral, located at the city's highest point. It is recognized for its 52-metre-tall (170 feet) belfry, which dominates the historic centre, and whose seven bells resonate throughout the city.

Your journey continues towards the Church of San Giovanni, followed by a visit to the sasso Barisano and sasso Cavoso neighborhoods. These areas showcase the ancient 'sassi di Matera', cave dwellings that have been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1993. The rock-hewn houses and golden-stone streets resemble those of Jerusalem and have been used as filming locations for notable films, including Mel Gibson's The Passion of the Christ.

Conclude your 50-minute tuk-tuk tour at Piazza San Francesco.
