Fall in love with the stunning centre of Matera - a picturesque city in Basilicata known for its famous churches and rock-cut houses known as Sassi!

Matera Walking Tour

The tour meets at 10 am in the Piazza Vittorio Veneto, starting our walking tour of the main points in this city, designated as the 2019 European Capital of Culture.

Our first stop will be the Piazza dei Sedile, home to a palace that has become a symbol of Matera's cultural life. We will proceed to Via Duomo, where we will see two ancient entry points: the Porta di Juso and the Porta di Suso.

The next notable attraction is the Matera cathedral, showcasing Romanesque architecture. Nearby is the Casa Grotta de Matera, a traditional house illustrating daily life in the "Sassi," recognized as UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

The influence of Sassi extends to places of worship, such as the Church of Santa Maria de Idris, which exemplifies this architectural style. The tour will conclude at 12:30.
