Murgia Materana Hiking Tour
On this hiking route through Murgia Materana, we'll visit cave churches and remnants of ancient medieval communities in this archaeological area.
We'll meet at the indicated time in Piazza Matteotti and head towards the Murgia Materana Regional Park.
To access this natural park rich in history, we'll cross the Murgia plateau. The Murgia Materana Regional Park and its cave churches were declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2007. The park features settlements from the Paleolithic and Neolithic eras, along with remains of medieval villages and convents.
During the hike, we'll explore the hills and rock caves, encountering unique geological traits, including deep karst breccias that form ravines.
Additionally, we'll pass through pastoral communities created by hermit monks and view cave paintings from the Greek-Byzantine period.
After two and a half hours of exploration, we'll return to the starting point to conclude the tour.
