The Sasso Barisano and Sasso Caveoso comprise the historic centre of Matera. This guided tour explores the houses and churches carved into the rock.
Sassi de Matera Guided Tour
Participants will meet at the scheduled time in Piazza Pascoli, where an introduction will provide insight into the area's history, architecture, and anthropological aspects.
The tour proceeds to Civita, the highest point of the Sassi of Matera. Monuments such as the baroque churches of Purgatorio and San Francesco d'Assisi will be observed during the walk.
The route continues through Via delle Beccherie, historically a shopping street, culminating at Piazza Vittorio Veneto, notable for the 19th-century fountain by King Ferdinand II and offers a panoramic view of the Sasso Barisano.
At Sasso Barisano, an underground space or 'hypogeum' will be visited, along with a cave house demonstrating peasant life until the 1950s. A nearby handicraft workshop features pieces made of tuff.
The tour then moves to Sasso Caveoso, where a rock-hewn cave church from the Italo-Greek period with icons from the 10th to 13th centuries will be explored.
The tour concludes with a tasting of typical products of Matera, varying by season, wrapping up three hours after starting.
