Sassi de Matera Guided Tour

The meeting point is at Piazza Pascoli, where we will embark on this journey into Matera's past, beginning with an introduction to its history and architecture.

We will proceed to the Civita, the highest point of the Sassi. Along the way, we will observe notable monuments, including the baroque churches of Purgatorio and San Francesco d'Assisi.

We will walk through Via delle Beccherie to Piazza Vittorio Veneto, where the 19th-century fountain built by King Ferdinand II is located, alongside a panoramic view of the Sasso Barisano.

In Sasso Barisano, we will visit an underground space or 'hypogeum', and a cave house depicting the life of peasants until the 1950s. A visit to a handicraft workshop featuring items made of tuff is also included.

Next, we will explore the Sasso Caveoso, where a rock-hewn cave church from the Italo-Greek period holds icons dated between the 10th and 13th centuries.

The tour concludes with a tasting of typical products of Matera, differing by season, three hours after it begins.
