In this guided tour of Sasso Barisano, we'll explore the alleyways and underground passages of this ancient district in the center of Matera and enter one of its typical cave houses.
Sasso Barisano Tour
We'll meet at the indicated time at Via Domenico Ridola 61, where we'll start this tour by discussing the history and culture of the city of Matera.
To reach Sasso Barisano, we'll take Via Ridola, where we'll see baroque-style buildings and temples, including the Lanfranchi seminary, the church of Santa Chiara, and the convent of the Poor Clares, home to the Domenico Ridola Archaeological Museum.
We'll pass the churches of Purgatorio and San Francesco and arrive at Piazza del Sedile, known for its vibrant atmosphere reflecting the Italian dolce vita. Next, we’ll take Via delle Beccheria, an ancient shopping street, leading us to Piazza Vittorio Veneto, where a panoramic view of Sasso Barisano awaits, accessed through narrow alleyways and underground passages.
In Sasso Barisano, we'll visit a typical cave house carved into the rock and learn how the inhabitants of Matera lived until they abandoned these dwellings years ago. Additionally, we will explore an ancient hypogeum underground.
On our return, we will stop for a tasting of local products. The tour lasts approximately 2.5 hours before we conclude our experience.
