Sasso Barisano Exploration
Our journey begins at Via Domenico Ridola 61 at the appointed time, where we will dive into the rich history and cultural significance of Matera.
As we make our way to Sasso Barisano via Via Ridola, you will encounter stunning baroque architecture and religious sites. On our path, we'll pass notable landmarks such as the Lanfranchi seminary, the church of Santa Chiara, and the convent of the Poor Clares, which hosts the Domenico Ridola Archaeological Museum.
Continuing past the churches of Purgatorio and San Francesco, we will arrive at Piazza del Sedile, a vibrant square teeming with an atmosphere that embodies the Italian dolce vita. Following this, we will stroll down Via delle Beccheria, a storied marketplace, leading us to Piazza Vittorio Veneto. Here, we’ll be treated to a stunning panoramic vista of Sasso Barisano, accessed through a series of narrow pathways and underground tunnels.
Upon reaching Sasso Barisano, we will enter one of its traditional cave houses, artistically carved into the stone and decorated in an authentic Italian manner. This stop will provide insight into the daily life of Matera's residents, who once inhabited these distinctive homes until their evacuation. We will also venture underground to uncover a historic hypogeum.
As we head back to our meeting point, we will conclude with a delightful sampling of local delicacies. After 2.5 hours of engaging exploration, we will part ways, having enjoyed a journey through the rich tapestry of this extraordinary city.
