Sasso Caveoso Guided Tour
In this guided tour of Sasso Caveoso, we will explore one of the oldest neighborhoods of Sassi di Matera. The tour starts at Via Domenico Ridola, 61, where we will gather at the scheduled time.
The tour begins with a brief overview of the historical, architectural, and anthropological aspects of Sassi di Matera, where the term "sassi" refers to houses carved into rock.
We will then proceed to Sasso Caveoso, one of the two districts of Sassi di Matera. We will visit the baroque church of San Pietro Caveoso and the Cave House, which is typically furnished and illustrates the life of ancient residents. Discussion will include the abandonment of these traditional homes in the 1950s due to laws enacted by President De Gasperi. Following this, the tour includes cave churches, rock-hewn temples constructed between the 10th and 13th centuries.
Our next stop will be Il Bottegaccio, an artisan workshop showcasing traditional crafts made from ceramics and papier-mâché. The tour concludes with a tasting of local products.
After 2 hours, we will return to the starting point to conclude our tour.
