In this guided tour of Sasso Caveoso, we will learn about one of the oldest neighborhoods of Sassi di Matera, discovering the cave churches and cave houses that comprise this ancient area.

Sasso Caveoso Guided Tour

At the scheduled time, we will meet at Via Domenico Ridola, 61 to start this tour of one of the most famous districts of Matera.

The tour begins with an introduction to the historical, architectural, and anthropological highlights of Sassi di Matera. The term "sassi" refers to the rock-carved houses that form the city’s historic center.

We will proceed to Sasso Caveoso, one of the two districts of Sassi di Matera, visiting the baroque church of San Pietro Caveoso and the Cave House, which illustrates the life of ancient inhabitants.

Discussion will include the migration of materanos from these homes in the 1950s following laws from President De Gasperi. We will also tour the cave churches, rock-hewn temples from the 10th to 13th centuries.

Our next stop is Il Bottegaccio, an artisan workshop where we will observe traditional crafts made with ceramics and papier-mâché. The tour concludes with a tasting of local products.

After 2 hours, we will return to the starting point to conclude the tour.
