Discover one of the most beautiful villages in Basilicata on our Melfi Private Tour. You'll be accompanied by an expert guide as you explore the rooms of the Norman Swabian castle and the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta.

Melfi Private Tour

At your chosen time, we'll meet at the entrance to the Castle of Melfi. Your guide will be waiting outside this significant fortress, known as the largest in southern Italy. The castle, surrounded by ten towers, is situated on a once volcanic hill and has a history dating back to the 11th century, initially built by Roberto il Guiscardo and later expanded by Frederick II of Swabia. It hosted six papal councils, including one by antipope Anacletus II.

On the ground floor, you'll visit the National Archaeological Museum of Melfi, where you can view artefacts from the Vulture area, including Daunian ceramics and bronze vases from Greeks and Etruscans. The Clock Tower features the 'Sarcophagus of Rapolla', dating to the second century AD, depicting a sleeping figure with Roman deities on the sides.

The tour continues to the historic centre of Melfi, concluding at the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta, established in 1055 by Roger Guiscard. The church's only remnant from earlier constructions is the bell tower from 1153, while its interior showcases an 18th-century coffered ceiling and late Baroque elements.

After completing the tour of Melfi's main sites, we'll conclude our private tour.
