Melfi Private Tour

At your chosen time, we will meet at the entrance to the Castle of Melfi. Your guide will be waiting outside this renowned fortress, the largest in southern Italy. The castle is situated on a once volcanic hill overlooking the town and was originally built in the 11th century by Roberto il Guiscardo, later enlarged by Frederick II of Swabia. It has hosted six papal councils, including one by antipope Anacletus II.

You will visit the National Archaeological Museum of Melfi on the ground floor, where artefacts from the Vulture area are displayed, including Daunian ceramics and a Roman sarcophagus known as the 'Sarcophagus of Rapolla' dating back to the second century AD.

The tour continues in the historic centre of Melfi at the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta, constructed in 1055 by Roger Guiscard. The church has seen various restorations, retaining only the 1153 bell tower. Inside, you will find an 18th-century coffered ceiling, pulpit, throne, and organ in late Baroque style.
