Surrounded by ten towers, the Castle of Melfi stands atop a once volcanic hill overlooking the town. Its history dates back to the 11th century, built by Roberto il Guiscardo and later enlarged by Frederick II of Swabia. The castle hosted six papal councils, including one by the antipope Anacletus II.

On the ground floor, visit the National Archaeological Museum of Melfi, where you'll see artefacts from the Vulture area, including Daunian ceramics and bronze vases by the Greeks and the Etruscans. Additionally, the Clock Tower houses the 'Sarcophagus of Rapolla', which dates back to the second century AD.

The tour continues to the historic centre of Melfi and the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta, built in 1055. The church retains its bell tower from 1153 and features an 18th-century coffered ceiling, pulpit, throne, and organ in late Baroque style.
