On this day trip to the Tsukan Sanctuary, we'll experience a Mayan ceremony, participate in a cooking workshop and swim in a cenote in the jungle.

Tour Details

Want to see one of the sites where an ancient Mayan legend comes to life? At the indicated time, we'll pick you up from your hotel in Merida and head east to visit one of the most fascinating sanctuaries of the Maya people of the Yucatán.

After an hour and a half's drive, we'll arrive at the Tsukan Sanctuary, where we'll first participate in a Mayan purification ceremony involving the Pich tree. After this, we'll explore the Mayan foundations and the ancient burial remains at the site.

We'll visit the temple dedicated to a serpent, believed by the Mayas to be the owner of the caves and cenotes. You will learn about this myth as we walk through the Mayan village towards the Mayan cooking workshop. Here, we will prepare tortillas on a traditional hotplate and learn to make a typical ‘recado’.

We will then go to a cenote where you can relax and swim in the crystal clear waters. Before returning to the minibus, we will have lunch at the Tsukan Sanctuary restaurant.

Finally, we'll conclude this 6-hour day trip by dropping you off at your hotel in Merida.
