Be enchanted by the sunset over Meteora, where nature and architecture meet amidst impressive rock formations topped by monasteries over 500 years old.
Meteora Sunset Trip
The monasteries of Meteora are a key reason to visit Greece. This day trip from Kalambaka allows you to admire the sunset at this unique location and visit one or two of the UNESCO-protected monasteries.
Pickup will occur at your hotel in Kalambaka or Kastraki in the morning. An English-speaking guide will provide insights into the history of the rock formations, which rise over 600 meters high, and the monasteries perched on them.
Of the original 24 monasteries, currently 13 remain, with six open for visitation: the Grand Meteora Monastery, the St. Nicholas Monastery, the Monastery of the Holy Trinity, St. Stephen's Monastery, Roussanou, and Varlaam Monasteries. On this trip, you can visit one or two of these monasteries at sunset.
Additionally, the trip includes a visit to the Byzantine church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, an 11th-century chapel nestled beneath the Meteora rocks.
As the day concludes, you’ll witness the sun setting behind the monasteries and have free time to admire and photograph the sunset, reminiscent of the Eagle’s Nest from Game of Thrones. Afterward, you will be returned to your hotel in Kalambaka or Kastraki.
Audio Guide
There will be no guided tours inside the monasteries, but an audio guide will be available for you to download and learn more about their history.
