The story behind the challenge

According to the legend, every morning Leonardo finds his fresco altered: the serpent from the Sforza family’s coat of arms is missing. One night, he catches the Devil in the act. The Devil offers a challenge: if Leonardo’s apprentice can solve a series of riddles, the serpent will remain; if not, the painting will be destroyed forever.
