On this hiking route to Serracozzo Cave, we'll explore the interior of Mount Etna by walking through its narrow volcanic tunnel, a unique experience on Europe's largest active volcano.
Description
At the indicated time, we will meet at the car park of the Citelli Refuge and start a trekking route to the most important cave of Etna, Serracozzo Cave. We will begin walking up Etna from 1740 meters (5708 feet) until we reach 2160 meters (7086 feet) above sea level, where the entrance to Serracozzo Cave is located. Along the way, we will pass through birch forests and observe the remains of volcanic rock.
Upon reaching the edge of the Bove Valley, we will encounter the Serra delle Concazze, an 8-kilometer-long (4.9-mile) depression on Etna's eastern side, where we will take a break to rest and eat. Afterwards, we will enter Serracozzo Cave through its volcanic tunnel. This elongated lava canyon, originating in 1971, features a light source from a small hole in the ceiling, creating a mesmerizing effect.
After exploring the cave, we will exit and return to the meeting point after 4 hours of hiking.
