Entrance to the Andes Museum 1972
Walk through an exhibit about one of the worst air tragedies in history at the Andes Museum 1972, located in downtown Montevideo. You will learn about an event known as "the tragedy and miracle in the Andes." On Thursday, October 12, 1972, flight FAU 571 took off from Montevideo airport to Santiago de Chile, but due to adverse weather, it landed in Mendoza, Argentina. The next day, it attempted to cross the Andes but crashed at over 12,139 ft (3,700 meters) in the Argentine Andes. After 72 days, 16 survivors were rescued in Chile, having faced temperatures of -30 C° and lacking water or food, leading to resorting to anthropophagy.
With your entrance, you will see the memorial dedicated to the victims and learn about the personal stories of the survivors. The museum, set in an old 19th-century mansion, features various displays, showcases, and interactive panels that illustrate the stories of solidarity, teamwork, and resilience. Personal objects belonging to the victims are also exhibited.
