Entrance to the Andes Museum 1972

Visit the Andes Museum 1972 in downtown Montevideo to explore an exhibit about one of history's worst air tragedies, known as "the tragedy and miracle in the Andes". On Thursday, October 12, 1972, flight FAU 571 took off from Montevideo airport toward Santiago de Chile. Due to weather conditions, it landed in Mendoza (Argentina) and took off again on Friday, October 13, aiming to cross the Andes. The plane crashed in the Argentine Andes, at over 12,139 ft (3,700 meters). After 72 days, 16 survivors were rescued in Chile. They endured temperatures of -30 C° without shelter, and the lack of food and water led them to resort to anthropophagy. The museum features a memorial to the victims, personal stories of survivors, and various items belonging to the crash victims.
