Hike up a volcano, visit a town buried by lava, and explore an indigenous purhépecha town on this tour of Angahuan and Parcutín Volcano from Morelia.

Angahuan & Paricutín Volcano Tour

At the designated time, we'll pick you up at your hotel in Morelia and head to the ruins of the town of San Juan Parangaricutiro, where the Paricutín volcano is located. Once there, we'll set out on a 2.5-kilometer (1.5-mile) hiking route.

During the hike, we'll see local flora including hawthorn, prickly pear, and oak trees. The area is arid due to volcanic activity. The volcano, which is the youngest on Earth, emerged from a farmer's field on 20 February 1943.

After our hike, we will visit the lava-covered ruins of the Church of San Juan Parangaricutiro, which is the only remnant of the village destroyed by the eruption. We'll go inside the church, where the façade and bell tower remain well-preserved despite surviving nine years of volcanic activity.

Next, we’ll proceed to the village of Angahuan, where we will engage with the local indigenous Purhepecha culture and language. We will see important sites, including the mural of the Legend of Paricutín, the Franciscan Chapel of Huatápera, and the Moorish-style Church of Santiago Apóstol. After the tour of Angahuan, you will have an hour of free time for food and local delicacies.

At the end of the tour, we will return to your hotel in Morelia, arriving around 8 pm.
