Excursion to Angahuan & Paricutín Volcano
Our journey will commence with a pick-up from your hotel in Morelia at the scheduled time, proceeding towards the remnants of the village of San Juan Parangaricutiro, the site of the Paricutín volcano. Here, we will embark on a hiking trail measuring 2.5 kilometers (1.5 miles).
As we trek up the volcano, be prepared to encounter hawthorn, prickly pear, and oak trees that dot its landscape. The surroundings reveal a largely arid environment, a testament to the volcanic phenomena in the area. This volcano is notably recognized as the youngest in the world, having erupted unexpectedly from a farmer's land on February 20, 1943.
Upon completing our hike, we will visit the lava-submerged ruins of the Church of San Juan Parangaricutiro, the sole remnant of a community that the Paricutín eruption decimated. Entering the church, you'll marvel at the well-preserved façade and bell tower, which remarkably endured nine years of volcanic eruption.
Following this, we will head to the village of Angahuan, where the vibrant indigenous Purhépecha culture and language await. Here, we will view significant landmarks, including a mural illustrating the Legend of Paricutín, the Franciscan Chapel of Huatápera, and the Moorish-style Church of Santiago Apóstol. After exploring Angahuan, you'll have one hour to purchase local food and taste regional specialties.
Concluding our excursion, we will return to your hotel in Morelia, with an anticipated arrival time of 8 p.m.
