El Rosario Monarch Butterfly Sanctuary
We'll meet on Avenida Francisco I. Madero and take a 3-hour drive to El Rosario Sanctuary, home to millions of monarch butterflies.
Upon arrival, we'll enter this protected environment located at 9842 feet (3000 meters) above sea level. You can tour the butterfly sanctuary either on foot or on horseback. During the 1.24 mile (2 kilometer) journey, you'll observe butterflies in the oyamel pine forests. There is a chance a butterfly may land on you.
Monarch butterflies migrate from the United States and Canada to hibernate. Our tour will cover their migration, including their ability to fly up to 80.7 miles (130 kilometers) a day and their wing flap rate of 300 to 700 times a minute.
After the sanctuary tour, we'll enjoy lunch featuring blue corn quesadilla and a cup of hot soup. Following lunch, we'll return to Morelia, concluding the trip after a total of 9 hours.
