Treme Neighbourhood Tour
At the scheduled time, we'll meet at 718 N Rampart St to start our guided tour of Treme, also known as New Orleans' African American neighborhood. We'll begin by exploring Congo Square and Louis Armstrong Park, delving into the history of this neighborhood where African Americans enjoyed freedom in the 18th century. The tour will reveal why this was so, along with other fascinating facts.
Throughout the tour, we will visit significant historical sites such as St. Augustine's Church, the first black Catholic church in the United States. We will discuss the impact of the Civil War on the neighborhood and the history of the Ku Klux Klan's actions in the area.
We’ll walk through streets featuring characteristic architecture and explore "Creole" houses. Additionally, we will learn about the history of jazz, rooted in the Treme district.
After about 2 hours of exploring the origins of New Orleans and its Afro-American culture, we will conclude our tour in Louis Armstrong Park.
