Discover the history of the oldest African American neighborhood in the United States on this tour of the Treme neighborhood in New Orleans. Stroll through tree-lined streets where Jazz was born, and see the famous Louis Armstrong Park and Congo Square.

Treme Neighbourhood Tour

At the scheduled time, we'll meet at 718 N Rampart St to begin our guided tour of Treme, known as New Orleans' African American neighborhood.

We will start by exploring Congo Square and Louis Armstrong Park, diving into the spirit of this historic neighborhood. In the 18th century, this area already had a population of free people, a significant fact we will explore.

The tour includes visits to important sites such as St. Augustine's Church, the first black Catholic church in the United States. We will discuss how freedom in this neighborhood was impacted post-Civil War and cover the history of the Ku Klux Klan and its persecutions in the district.

As we walk through the picturesque streets, we will observe the characteristic Creole houses and learn about the history of jazz, including its origins in the Treme district.

After approximately 2 hours, the tour will conclude in Louis Armstrong Park, having gained insight into the origins of New Orleans and its Afro-American culture.
