Cerro Verde Volcano and Mayan Ruins Trip

Experience a day immersed in the history and nature of three iconic locations in San Salvador. You'll enter the Natural Protected Area of Cerro Verde and visit the ruins of Joya de Cerén and San Andrés.

Description

We'll pick you up at your selected pickup point, before departing on a one-hour drive to Los Volcanes National Park, a large area of volcanoes and lakes.

Upon arrival, we'll set off on a 45-minute hike toward Cerro Verde Volcano, located at an altitude of 2,035 meters (6,600 feet). We will follow ecological trails, where you can admire Santa Ana Volcano and Izalco Volcano, nicknamed the 'Lighthouse of the Pacific.'

We will stroll through a cloud forest before reaching the crater near the summit of Cerro Verde Volcano. Surrounded by typical plant species of the area, such as Giant Agave, we will enjoy views of the volcanic lake of Coatepeque.

In the afternoon, we'll trek to the archaeological site of Joya de Cerén, known as the "Pompeii of America." You'll discover a pre-Columbian Mayan agricultural village and learn about its well-preserved structures.

Then we head to the archaeological site of San Andrés, exploring various structures used by the rulers and the remains of an indigo mill buried by the eruption of El Playón in 1658. After, we will return to San Salvador, where our adventure ends.

If you prefer pickup at your hotel in San Salvador, there is a supplement of 10 USD per person in cash on the tour day. For hotels in Tunco, the supplement is 20 USD per person.
