When reserving your experience, you have the option to select from two distinct events, each occurring on a separate day. Both options will fully immerse you in the enchanting essence of this celebration:

October 31: Altars and Celebration at the Cemetery (11 hours)

We will commence our day in the community of San Antonino Castillo Velasco, where we’ll wander through the stunning fields of cempasúchil flowers. As we stroll among these vibrant blooms, you will learn about the rich symbolism these flowers hold, being essential to any Day of the Dead altar.

Following this, we will proceed to the local market, providing you an opportunity to select and purchase key items for your own altar. Experience the lively ambiance as you explore the market, filled with sugar skulls, candles, and other customary objects.

Our journey will then take us to a traditional family residence, where we can savor a comforting cup of chocolate atole along with some local snacks. Here, you will admire a beautifully adorned family altar and witness firsthand Oaxacan familial traditions, with a chance to engage in discussions with the homeowners.

Next, we will visit the renowned Panteón de Xoxocotlán, a site imbued with spirituality and remembrance. As we explore the tombs decorated with flowers and candles, you will gain insight into the profound emotional relevance of this evening vigil.

To conclude our day, we will enjoy a traditional dinner featuring tlayudas, a signature dish of Oaxaca.

November 1: Reveling with La Catrina (12 hours)

Once we gather, our first destination will be the Atzompa archaeological zone, a significant Zapotec site that was crucial for the expansion of Monte Albán. Together, we will explore this area linked to the ancient elite, where palaces, funerary structures, and the residences of priests once thrived. A notable detail about this site is its trio of ball courts, uncommon within a single location.

From Atzompa, we will head to Villa de Etla, making a special visit to witness the creation of the famous wooden alebrijes crafted by the Mixes communities, followed by a local tasting at the market.

As dusk approaches, the atmosphere will transform: we’ll proceed to the town center to join a traditional comparsa. Beneath the lively sounds of the local band, we will fully engage in the joyful musical heritage of the Day of the Dead, allowing the celebration's spirit to envelop us.

To wrap up our evening, we will indulge in a delectable traditional dinner of tamales, paired with Oaxacan hot chocolate and mezcal. Enjoy!
