Description
On the day of the activity, participants will meet at the Paihia Information Centre at the scheduled time for the tour of the Kawiti Glowworm Caves, Hundertwasser Exhibition Centre, and Opua Forest.
The tour will begin with a visit to the Glowworm Caves. A local Maori guide will lead the group through the underground caverns for approximately 30 minutes along a 200-metre-long wooden boardwalk. Participants will observe thousands of glowworms illuminating the cave ceilings and learn about the life cycle of the native New Zealand glowworm.
Following the caves, the tour will proceed to Kawakawa to see the "Hundertwasser Toilets," designed by artist Friedensreich Hundertwasser in 1999, and visit the Hundertwasser Cultural Centre, which opened on February 22, 2022. This center features works by Hundertwasser and local Maori arts. A fresh cream doughnut will also be enjoyed in the area.
The final destination will be Opua Forest, home to Kauri trees over 1000 years old. The tour concludes with a return to the Wharf, passing by the Waitangi lookout for photo opportunities. The entire tour lasts 4 hours.
