Overview of the Capuchin Catacombs in Palermo
This extensive catacomb network is formed by interwoven passageways etched into volcanic rock, spanning approximately 300 square meters (3,230 square feet). Within these chambers lie about 2,000 mummified remains and skeletons, including, according to legend, the infamous Count of Cagliostro.
Mummies are categorized into various galleries based on gender, social rank, and professions. The oldest section features the Capuchin Friars, entombed in their distinctive religious attire. Another chamber is specifically for priests, artfully preserved in their ceremonial robes.
Additional notable sections encompass the women's corridor, the Chapel of the Crucifix, which shelters the remains of young virgin women, the men's corridor, the Chapel of the Children, and the family corridor.
Details of the Tour
Our adventure commences at the designated hour at Piazza Cappuccini, where we’ll delve into the depths of Palermo's Capuchin Catacombs. Are you prepared to explore one of Sicily's most extraordinary locales?
Once inside, we will navigate through various sections of the catacombs, including the area reserved for the Capuchin Friars, the tomb of the young Rosalia Lombardo (often referred to as "sleeping beauty" for her remarkably lifelike appearance), and the corridor occupied by prominent individuals like the sculptors Filippo Pennino and Lorenzo Marabitti.
Following our exploration, we will proceed to the Sant'Orsola Cemetery, a charming historical site that honors many of Palermo’s illustrious individuals, including Ninni Cassarà, Libero Grassi, Mario Rutelli, and Luigi Natoli. What fascinating stories they hold!
