Galeras Volcano + Villages Exploration
We'll convene at 8:30 am near the Antonio Nariño monument to embark on our journey to discover the beauty surrounding the Galeras volcano, which happens to be the most active volcano in Colombia.
As we traverse the scenic landscapes adorned with coffee plantations and dramatic canyons, our journey will take us to Genoy. This community has adapted remarkably to life in proximity to the Galeras volcano, standing just 7 kilometers (4.3 miles) away!
After delving into the rich history of Genoy, our next stop will be the municipality of Nariño, famous for its delicious yucca wrappers, a traditional treat. We will then proceed to La Florida, another village where agriculture and livestock farming thrive. Here, visitors can delight in an array of dairy offerings including cheese, cakes, and ice cream.
Our next destination is Sandoná, from which we will embark on a brief trek to explore one of the area’s stunning waterfalls. On our return, we will meet local artisans, the women weavers who transform iraca fibre from tropical palms into an assortment of handcrafted items including hats and bracelets.
In Sandoná, we will also stop by the local school before following a path to a family-run farm. Here, we will savor a wholesome homemade lunch prepared by the host family, along with a taste of their exquisite high-altitude coffee, cultivated right in the hills nearby.
After lunch, we will stroll through the central square and marvel at the Basilica of Our Lady of the Rosary of Sandoná, a grand neo-Gothic church featuring a wooden Christ statue created by sculptor Alfonso Zambrano.
Our journey will then take us to the final village, Consaca. Here, the panoramic views of the volcanic mountain range are truly breathtaking, with vibrant colors blending seamlessly with the surrounding panela fields. We will explore the traditional sugar mills, where the panela canes are processed, and you will have the chance to sample the delightful melcocha sandoneña, a sweet delicacy made from panela and peanuts.
We will conclude our adventure with our return to Pasto, aiming to arrive back at approximately 6:30 pm.
